Beans "Deathsweater"
Design, Animation & Editorial by The Wilderness

Deathsweater has been a labor of love, but always worth it to collaborate with our dear friend Beans. We were originally witness to his talent and vision when we directed the Volcano video for Antipop Consortium in 2010. Because of his epic poetry, it was clear the video should be designed with the words as the centerpiece. Shot with our Bolex camera using black and white film, our goal was for the simplicity of the values to highlight the compelling graphics. After processing the film, we edited the footage, and then set about the challenge of designing the graphics. We used a combination of fonts (a lot of them!), hand drawn illustrations and copies, and thus embarked on the long journey of hand animation. We are psyched at the end result, Beans and his poetry!

Wilkes University "Army Of Colonels" 160 over 90
Direction, Editorial, Animation & Finish by The Wilderness

How does one go about visually concepting a commercial for Wilkes University? We tossed around a few ideas and decided the best solution was to head down there and take a look around! This look around comprised of two cameras shooting tons and tons of sequences that in the edit, gave us the flexibility and freedom to play with the pacing and timings of the key points. The spot uses a combination of general exterior and specific interior imagery to show a well rounded Wilkes University experience. In the edit, we built an intentional arch that is emphasized by tracked type animations and subtle details.

Wall Street Journal "Live In The Know" McGarry Bowen New York
Design, Editorial & Finish by The Wilderness

We teamed up with McGarry Bowen on this new anthem commercial for the Wall Street Journal to accompany their new multimedia campaign. highlighting the new direction the paper is taking with color, images, and expanded editorial focus, the agency came up with the concept "Live In The Know." We used the masthead as the foundation for the spot. We made a conscious effort to find the right still images with which we could explore different types of animation, techniques, and edits. Keeping the focus on lines like: "The Real Street Journal," "The Local Street Journal," etc. We came up with a visual language that conveys the right emotion.

Virgin Atlantic "Hello Gorgeous"
Direction, Animation & Visual Effects by The Wilderness

For this spec spot, we wanted to create a sense of open air, general ease but combine it with a bit of drama as the spot moves from day into night. We took hundreds of photos to come of with the right combination in which we would be able to convey this vibe and feeling. In the end, we decided to juxtapose the the type, which is connected and intertwined and place it against the vast sky. Using subtle sound affects, authentic to the city, we end up feeling feeling like we are in a serene dream world.

Verizon "Holiday" McGarry Bowen New York
Direction, Design, Animation, Effects & Finish by The Wilderness

For Verizon's holiday campaign, we teamed up with McGarry Bowen to create a beautiful CG, all 3D, winter wonderland. To highlight the phones and engage the viewer, we created a world filled with snowflakes and particles on an icy mountainous landscape. The phones, move in and around this world as if they were pushed and propelled by a gust of wind. As the wind slows down, the phones rotate around where the type comes out from behind to show the offers.

Verizon "Scenes" McGarry Bowen New York
Design, Stop-Motion, Editorial, Effects & Finish by The Wilderness

This back to school ad for Verizon was meant to capture the positive role that mobile technology can play in organizing our lives and enhancing our educational, familial and social relationships. The phones serve as the visual bridge between the different aspects of the protagonists life. The phones were animated in stop-motion in order to create a dynamic, poppy, and tactile vibe. The video content was composited, tracked and looped using After Effects. The end result is a streamlined, singular story of a day in the life.
