The Wilderness has produced and directed a new video for the band “Awesome Color.” The song “Eyes of Light” is the first single from their new album Electric Aborigines. For the video, The Wilderness created 5 minutes of slit-scanned animations which were edited to the song and rear projected behind the band. The lighting system, designed by Richard Ulivella, utilized a computer program that reads images from the background projections.
It then applies complementary hues/levels to the foreground light rig comprised of multiple varilights.
The slit-scanned elements were shot over a two week period prior to the live action. Acetate prints were shot frame by frame using a digital still camera on long exposure times. The resulting “shots” were cut together to the song. For the live action, the slit-scanned sequence was rear-projected behind the band with a 12k Barco projector while the band performed in front of it. The video, photographed by Ivan Abel, was shot at 4k using the Red One camera with Zeiss prime lenses.
Awesome Color is a power trio updated for the 2060’s, noise provocateurs and impressionists, ace players with punk rock flair, inspired citizens of a small modernist nation of musical, visual, and literary outrage on the outskirts of Brooklyn, or a rainbow amalgam of all of the above at once.
The Wilderness is a partnership of directors, designers, animators, illustrators, and editors that work together and independently. Founded in late 2004 by Juliet Rios and Gabe Imlay, The Wilderness has grown to include a diverse team of artists, working on commercials, broadcast spots, film titles, music videos, and art and video installations.
Ivan Abel is a director of photography who has worked with Michael Gondry, PEZ, Peter Sluska and shot videos for Kanye West, Devendra Banhart, Battles and commercials for Wendy’s, Sprint, Converse and Nike.
